Yield-line mechanisms and design proposal for endplate connections in rectangular hollow section members in tension

Hollow section members are popular elements in steel constructions, especially when they mainly loaded by normal forces, like simply supported columns or truss members. The individual hollow can be combined bolted endplate connections. If the bolts arranged at all four sides of rectangular section, design rules for T-stub model from widely used Eurocode EN 1993–1-8 cannot applied due to missing failure mechanisms (yield-line mechanisms) whole plate. presented research deals with this problem. A parameter study on different layouts and without chamfers has been done using a verified numerical model. is based discontinuity layout optimization (DLO) method delivers relevant yield-line plate bolts. Based these observed mechanisms, simple conform proposal worked out endplates chamfers. obtained resistances DLO calculations within deviation approximately 10%.
